Amazing reader...

Miriam decided to read a story to Rebekah and Michael before nap today. It is amazing how she can read just about any children's book on our shelf lately- she took a flying leap from reading "easy readers" to reading anything and everything in sight. I have to be careful at the computer because she can now read my emails over my shoulder!

Today she choose Curious George Learns the Alphabet; it is not a story that we've read more than once this year, so she's not reading from memory. Miriam is 5 years and 5 months old, and this book is placed at level 3.2 on the Accelerated Reader list, which means it is on a third grade level!!

This fall Miriam will begin Kindergarten...can you call a child a Kindergartener when she can read at a 3rd grade level???

Notice on the video how she is moving almost the entire time she is reading- climbing all over the place even! She does this the entire time she's doing the things that most people would sit still for. I almost have to hold her down when she sits beside me and reads to me to keep her from bumping me all over the place- I literally put my arm across her lap like a seatbelt. When she does written work she usually ends up standing in front of her chair so she can move and work at the same time- if she manages to remain in the chair she does not remain still at all; she puts her legs up, down, to the side, moves to sit on her knees, goes back to feet dangling, etc. It's wild and tiring to watch! It does not seem to effect her ability to learn, read, or complete her work at all though. I don't know how she concentrates with all that movement, yet she remembers more and makes less mistakes when allowed to fidget (just like her Daddy!). If I force her to sit still she is easily distracted from the task at hand.
