Miriam's first word!!

Miriam read her first word today all by herself!!! We haven't been "doing school" since before Christmas. We have been talking a lot in general about what sound the letters make. She loves to write, so if she asks how to spell a word I help her hear the sounds in the word instead of just spelling it out for her.

Today while drinking her juice box she said, "Mom a-p-p-l-e spells apple." I was amazed and asked her how she knew that. Turns out she looked at her juice box and picked out the word apple by sounding out the letters--of course there were pictures of apples on the box, but she knew which word to read! She demonstrated all the letter sounds to me seperately, then blended them together!

In our school work we are doing one letter a week, learning what it looks like, how to write it, and it's most common sound. However, we are not yet blending letters together during lessons, in fact we've not yet done any vowels and the only consonant in apple that we've learned is P!!!!
Wow!
